[personality] As a shikigami - in brief, essentially a familiar - Ran's first priority in life will always be to tend to her mistress Yukari. This isn't just because she's grown a deep sense of loyalty to her mistress over the past centuries that she's been Yukari's servant (though she has), but because shikigami like Ran have their lives quite literally defined by numbers and equations. For centuries, Ran has acted only as Yukari's equations and boundaries have directed her to act – only as she's been ordered to. In Ukiyo, as a human, she'll be free of her inherent limitations... but she won't be any less genuinely loyal to her mistress.

Given that Yukari is rather lazy and sleeps during most of the day – most of the year, really – Ran is the one who minds the household entirely. She's very dutiful and responsible, and does what is expected of her without a single word of complaint. Ran is excellent at household chores like cleaning and cooking – she's been doing this for centuries, after all.

Beyond her all-important purpose and duties to her mistress, Ran is often described as “mild,” which is actually fairly apt. Most of the time, she's very pleasant and calm, with a very kind, often motherly demeanor about her. Of course, maturity and responsibility aside, Ran is still at heart a kitsune – a trickster fox. She wouldn't have lasted centuries as Yukari's shikigami if she didn't have a playful side and occasionally enjoy teasing or playing tricks on others. Of course, it's all in good fun – her games are rarely malicious and almost always mostly harmless.

Mostly harmless tricks aside, it's very hard to make Ran angry – but there are a few things that do it. She'll defend Yukari with her life, and given her shikigami nature, if you interfere with the important tasks that Yukari has given her (mainly to reinforce the mystical barriers in Gensokyo) she will not be happy. Ran is a rarity as a shikigami in that she's powerful enough to have a shikigami of her own – a little cat named Chen – and messing with Chen is a very quick way to earn her wrath. Thankfully, Chen isn't in Ukiyo, but her generally motherly streak extends to children as a whole – don't pick on them when she's around, or she'll be rather displeased.

Ran is extraordinarily intelligent, too. Since shikigami are so defined by equations and numbers, Ran has a special affinity for those, and will often spend time mentally calculating silly things like how long it would take to walk to the moon when she's bored. Even if she won't have her shikigami nature in Ukiyo, Ran's love for math and numbers remains unchanged.

Oh, and she also really likes fried tofu. Don't ask, it's a fox thing.

[orientation] Unknown. It doesn't come up in Touhou, given that there's all of one prominent named male character in the entire franchise. Ran is wholly devoted to her mistress Yukari, but that's just their relationship - not an orientation.

[appearance] Three things mark Ran as being a fox shikigami rather than a human. The first is her yellow eyes - while this isn't a dead giveaway, they're a bit unusual. It's harder to miss her fox ears, though she usually covers them with a cap.

Of course, the biggest tip-off is her tails. As a full-fledged nine-tailed fox, Ran has... well, she has nine fox tails, exactly as it sounds. Given that they're big, fluffy, and look oh-so-warm, hiding her tails is pretty darn impossible for Ran. Not that it bothers her; she's used to it by now... but those familiar with what nine-tailed foxes actually mean in Asian mythology might be a bit weirded out.

[wish] While Ran is wholly devoted to her mistress Yukari, her wish is actually not for Yukari but for her own Chen - she dearly wishes with all of her heart that the little kitten will always have the strength to take care of herself when Ran can't be there with her. This wish may be borne out of her worry that she's leaving Chen behind like this.

[requested house] Henshu. She's got the ears AND the tails for it.

[misc notes] As a shikigami, Ran is effectively immortal (or at least has life far beyond that of a normal being), and has the power to comprehend information based on equations and numbers. She also has the power to repair and manipulate boundaries that her mistress Yukari has granted her, though Yukari's power far outstrips her own.

Like all residents of Gensokyo, she can fly and shoot lots of magic lasers and orbs through her Spell Cards.

ALSO, Ran will be keeping her memories from the last time in Ukiyo.

SAMPLES

[sample 1#] A post from the first time I was in the game. Does this count the same as a mocksandals post? I don't see why it wouldn't (If it doesn't, though, please let me know).

[sample 2#] Ran's feet padded quietly on the floor as she made her way toward the little fire pit in the corner of the room - the flames were dying, and the winter's cold was beginning to seep in through the windows of her personal chamber. Even a relatively high-class establishment such as this wasn't immune to the ravages of the seasons, it turned out. She knelt by the dying fire, picking up a small, dry piece of wood from the dwindling pile next to the pit and gingerly sliding it into the flickering heat with the practiced ease of someone who had done this hundreds of times before.

Another small log joined the first in the flames, and then a third. Ran leaned over, balancing herself with her hands on her knees, and gently blew on the base of the fire, slowly and calmly and patiently. She watched closely as the flames picked up for a moment, licking and clawing at the log - and it caught.

Ran sat upright again, satisfied that the fire would survive for the moment without her ministrations (but keeping an eye on it nonetheless)... not that the cold bothered her, naturally. Of course, she wasn't lighting this fire for her, but for the benefit of those who would share her room who didn't have nine warm and fluffy tails that they could wrap around themselves for heat. Which, last she checked, was pretty much everybody but her.

Her gaze lingered on the fire. It looked different, like everything else did here. Well no, that wasn't exactly true. Fire looked the same as it always had as long as she was just viewing it with her eyes... but for Ran, there was something missing. Some conceptual understanding of the fire, of precisely how the wood was consumed by the flame - she would have seen numbers and patterns and strings amidst the orange and yellow. She would have been busy calculating how long, at the current rate, it would take for the log to be completely consumed (and at what rate the rate itself was changing, if she were really bored).

But here, all she saw was the fire licking away at the wood. Nothing more. It was an unsettling sight... but she tried not to dwell on it. After all, she had work to do, didn't she? A client would be here soon. Time to prepare and put these things from her mind entirely.
